I’m not exactly sure how the hell I managed to miss “Astrospies,” PBS’ beyond-awesome documentary about the secret Cold War space race to put spooks in orbit. I’m just glad I was able to catch the show — which originally aired in February — on-line, last night.

As well as developing powers of precognition, Laaksonen has also developed a shield that makes him impervious to his and his friends’ enemies. In the same letter to Areva, he says:

you can be assured, that unfriendly writings in papers have had no effect on me and i will not let them have any impact on the good co-control we have with the experts and managers of your organization.’

When they come to make the movie of Laaksonen’s life, it’s going to be spectacular.

This all follows unconfirmed reports that STUK safety inspectors have developed x-ray vision. After concerns over the state of the welding and inspection procedures in Olkiluoto 3’s steel framework were revealed, STUK declared that everything at the site is fine. How could they have done that if they don’t have x-ray vision? The idea that they would have taken the word of Bouygues, the scandal-prone company responsible for the welding and safety procedures, is just unbelievable.

All this must be true. The alternative theory to STUK’s representatives developing superpowers is that STUK aren’t doing their vital job properly and snuggling up to the very people they should be scrutinising. But that would be complete fantasy. Wouldn’t it?

Phil Rosenthal of the Chicago Tribune reports that The Huffington Post will be launching their new Chicago-based site on Thursday.

Aside from the standard outside contributions, the liberal news aggregator/blog will only have a single paid writer, Ben Goldberger, 25, a former Chicago Sun-Times staffer.

Willow Bay, former Good Morning America weekend co-host, is editor-at-large overseeing the site’s expansion, with hopes of localizing into 10 to 20 more sites over the next few years.

“It offers Chicago residents — and those who love Chicago — a place to sound off when the spirit moves them, or when a metro story infuriates them, or during times when the Cubs hit a rough patch. And, of course, when they discover a fabulous new restaurant!” Bay told Wired.com.

The question here is whether or not the HuffPo branches will be as popular as the national site. They will have to really focus on local content to drive traffic, but with only one paid staffer that might be a difficult task. And as Kevin Allman points out via Poynter, contributors looking for bylines and exposure may prefer a wider audience.

Bay is optimistic about participation.

“We are offering passionate and smart Chicagoans an opportunity to have their voices heard, and we’re confident they’ll respond well to this opportunity,” she said. “So far, the response has been tremendously enthusiastic.”

According to a statement from the Chicago-based company, the Austin studio will remain open, but today’s layoffs affected 90 of the 130 people currently working there.

Midway has developed and published such games as TNA iMPACT!, Blitz: The League II, and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
